I will always remember the spirit of the people – the group was truly international and enhanced the openness to share knowledge and experience within the group.Mischa, Germany
All courses included workshop sessions with complementary theoretical and practical content offered by academic staff and experienced trainers. Within 2 to 3 weeks, the following one-week classes were featured:
I really enjoyed the great combination of theoretical and practical parts which enabled me to have the opportunity to exercise what I learned. And, of course, I really appreciate the positive attitude of participants and staff.Jason, Malaysia
In addition, several evening lectures (some examples: Dr. Horst Harnischfeger [former secretary general of the Goethe Institute] on the topic of Intercultural experience in the framework of an institution to promote cultural exchange; Dr. Christoph Vatter [Saarland University] on Intercultural aspects in English, German and Canadian SitComs; Werner Kranwetvogel [photographer] on North Korean Massgames; Dr. Wolfgang Pape [Research Fellow at CEPS and university lecturer] on Human Relations in Europe, Asia and America) enabled participants to get further insights to intercultural issues and understanding the German and European culture. A rich social program and several excursions enabled participants to spend more time together, thus strengthening the intercultural experience. Furthermore, culture simulations like BaFa BaFa enhanced their comprehension of intercultural issues.
The evening lectures were excellent and added high points to the Summer Academy.Natalia, Argentina
In the past eight editions (from 2010 to 2017) we welcomed a total of 421 participants from 58 countries and 6 continents, 60 trainers and 26 faculty members.
The learning and living atmosphere that was created, encouraged students to practise what was preached in classes. During breaks and evening activities many discussions about intercultural topics continued. Self reflection played an important role both during and after class.
Before the Summer Academy I was nervous to talk about my ideas in class, I just listened to others, though sometimes I had a different opinion. But there I raised my hand to say: “I don’t think so, I think…” The most important thing is not what I said; it’s that I had the courage to share it with the others. I really thank the Summer Academy for giving me the opportunity to become a braver girl. It is nice to see the growth on myself.
Xiaomei, China
I am very grateful for having been at this amazing Summer Academy – it had not been possible for me without the scholarship.Ieva, Lithuania
In 2010 as well as in 2011, we were really happy to provide almost all participants of the Summer Academy on Intercultural Experience with scholarships. In 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 we were able to keep up these numbers.
I used the earned 6 ECTS to complete my elective courses at university. Thus, the Summer Academy offered me an exciting and worthwhile addition to the standard curriculum of my university and gave me a head start to my master studies.Uta, Germany
All Summer Academies were of great success and we are already looking forward to the next edition in 2018! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact contact (at) summeracademy-karlsruhe.org

Week 2: Diversity and Sustainable Integration
In any case of doubt, please contact the person in charge of admissions: contact (at) summeracademy-karlsruhe.org
This course is focusing on some of the principal rules and ways of entering and administrating international cooperation networks. The topic includes institutional as well as social conditions and constraints on the relationship-building processes. In order to show a complete panorama of the related issues, this course will introduce in some basic terms of political sciences, will sound the frameworks in some societal domains (like media, education, industrial sectors) and will discuss some cases of regional and border-crossing integration processes (e.g. in the EU, but not exclusively). The seminar will as well ask if management and organization are phenomena which can be explained in any context by a ‘typical western perspective’ of rationality, efficiency and effectiveness or if other perspectives are more suitable to guide analysis and problem solving processes.

Today’s societies are differentiated up to a very high degree, due to the flux of migration and refugees, but often just because of historical developments that led to the current situation. Influencing factors can be post-colonial politics, economical dynamics, changing awareness of diversity in a specific context, and, of course, the overall globalization of information.Sometimes, intercultural issues derive from differences in the cultural encoding and decoding of our activities. Often, as well, diversity is interpreted as ideology and the encounter of conflicting value systems. This course introduces in the basic terminology of international conflict resolution and peace research, and studies some exemplary cases, e.g. the conflict in Palestine, Timor, North Morocco etc.
Trainers: Thanakon Tiwawawong, Fernanda Ogasawara and Fareeda Atwan
This course introduces you to the most important foundations of the study and research on cultural diversity. From the principal understanding, that diversity is a product of socio-communicative processes, we will find ways to develop the standpoint that diversity is an expression of the relational connections between social identities. On the one hand, diversity is an integrating momentum of life that helps us to develop and socialize in specific societal environments. On the other hand, the perceived cultural diversity within the society or within an organization is a result of our own activities and the way we define our relationships. The deeper understanding of this mechanism sheds light on the potentials of diverse socio-cultural configurations.
Trainers: tbd
The theories of exclusion and inclusion in recent sociological and cultural research (Luhmann, Rathje, and others) clearly show that discrimination and biases in leadership behavior are strongly linked to ideological imprintings and stereotypical social cognitions. This holds true for the respective phenomena all around cultural diversity as well, where “culture” is sometimes mistaken for “power” or “competence”. The development of socio-cultural sustainable solutions in the context of a diverse society that needs integration will help to overcome the categorical underpinnings with regard to the related conflict. This course will treat some of these phenomena with special attention towards migration and intercultural integration.
Trainers: Monika Wisniewska, Lucas Hackradt and Jana Holla
All courses are taught by an international faculty, featuring recognized academic experts in the fields of intercultural communication, international relations, cultures and conflicts, multicultural society as well as on intercultural competence and intercultural trainings. The complementary workshop sessions with theoretical and practical content are offered by trainers with large experience in international environments.
We will inform you about the guest lecturers soon.
